Since everyone knows how important link building is to the success of a plastic surgeon’s practice, some have gotten a little overzealous in their activities. Just as black hat tactics have destroyed the visibility of a few sites, specific black hat link building tactics have destroyed the visibility of a few more, especially some that were once ranking really well.
In fact, these days we are often tasked with toxic link removal to help lift a Google penalty that is keeping an aesthetic practitioner from ranking at all. Why is this happening? Well, over the past few years Google has been ramping up its Penguin algorithm updates. These are algorithm updates focused primarily on links, and chiefly bad, spammy links. They have caught on to all the link building schemes that were used so successfully in the past to fabricate visibility and generate revenues for people who use them.
The golden days of toxic link building are behind us, as Google has gotten so much smarter at detecting what is real and what is not. There were a couple of years there where many companies outsourced their efforts to other companies, often in India and the Philippines, and these companies went on a link building binge. Getting tons of spam links, including low quality links from Russian directory sites to blog spam, to discussion forum spam. If you are using a bunch of fake or fabricated links to mimic visibility, and then all of a sudden Google stops counting those links, then you may be left with very few real and credible links to count. As such, your visibility drops. And today we’re seeing scores of sites that have been hampered by these harmful efforts and eventually nailed by Google.
