SEO: Expectations Vs. Reality

November 4, 2019 by Surgeon's Advisor

SEO has been a hot topic for years. The subject matters because companies that rule the SERPs earn more money. They have instant access to a global network of targeted visitors who turn into paying customers. That’s why people crave more SEO knowledge.

However, the reality is not always as it appears in the world of search engine optimization. People have quite a few misconceptions, which are worth covering.

It’s Not All About the Keywords

In the earliest, most primitive days of SEO, people were obsessed with keywords. Their attention to the subject has kept it accessible for years. Yes, keyword research matters, but it’s hardly the only thing that goes into earning a top ranking.

In addition to researching keywords, it’s even more vital to understand your customer’s needs and intentions. Then you can compile demographic information to map the perfect avatar for marketing. With the right demographic targeting in place, your site will experience blossoming conversion rates.

Local search is vital, so make sure to include variations of key phrases that indicate geographic information.

It’s Not All About Social Media

Social media success can help a site get more famous, but it’s hardly a silver bullet that ensures SEO success. Social media links don’t count in Google, so it’s the traffic that carries the most weight. However, if you suffer from a high bounce rate from social channels, it’s doubtful that you’ll see a boost in the rankings.

Social media has plenty of benefits, but direct SEO juice is not one of them. Use it to build connections and relationships, which will also develop traffic and sales.

SEO Is Going to Take Time

The web is massive, and seeing rankings increases takes time, even when you do everything right. Impatient people won’t stick around if they think they’re not getting results, and that’s a mistake. When you think it’s not happening, the results begin to kick in. When you taste that sweet taste of organic traffic, you’ll realize that taking your time and doing it right work.

If you expect that SEO will get you fast traffic, put that misconception on hold. Prepare for a long-term campaign before you see decent results. Make sure your budget can go for a year before the traffic rolls in.

Build a Strong Outreach Program

The best results in SEO come from Outreach programs. Building relationships with other webmasters and blog owners results in more backlinks that are on-topic and strong. Ask people for links, and sometimes you will receive it. If they want something in return, like a guest post, you can do so quickly to form an ad hoc alliance.

Teaming up with other websites is the ideal way to build more influence. It may not be easy at first to deal with very successful webmasters. After they see you’re serious and never give up, you’ll find that you’re getting better opportunities all the time.

SEO Is Not a Destination

People talk about SEO like it’s a destination where they plan on ending up. It’s more like a journey; actually, that helps people achieve goals. Bad sites don’t prosper because they get free traffic. It’s almost always better to fix the landing page than it is to worry about building rankings. However, when you have a high-conversion landing page, SEO works wonders by bringing in new and targeted prospects.

Many people with successful websites focus on making their website the best. They skip doing effective SEO and let it come naturally as a byproduct of their excellent work. That could be a smart way to do things for companies that have a unique product that stands out from the crowd.

A Top Ranking May Be Impossible

If you’re looking at a SERP and the top sites there are trillion-dollar companies; you may not have a chance at beating them. Why do you ask? Because they spend so much online that their rankings are nearly impossible to defeat. That’s why one of the keys to setting the right expectations is to find attainable keywords.

You want to find keywords that are low competition but deliver decent levels of traffic. That means your company can compete and will receive rewards for doing that consistently. When the level of competitors is way too high, there’s little chance to make a move upward. Avoid spending money on lost causes and look for intent-driven searches.

Most local businesses will want to rank highly for brand or category searches. Those are much easier to rank for and have buying intent, so that’s the sweet spot for nearly every local business. With a solid plan of attack that includes Google My Business and directory listings in conjunction with reputation management, even small businesses can get more sales online.

It’s All Local Now

Syncing up with directories across the web will help you develop more local search traffic. GPS companies for automobile manufacturers can deliver drivers right to your doorstep, so go for laser specific targeting. Focus your SEO budgets and efforts on winnable terms that come from the nearby area. Companies that do that are raking in big bucks by getting new customers.

SEO is changing, but some of the principles remain unshaken. High-quality content creation is always going to stay a core strategy worth pursuing. The visitors who land on your pages will judge your company by the quality of the page. That’s why it’s a savvy idea to give them a piece of content that thoroughly satisfies their query.

Anyone ready, willing, and able to go the extra mile and produce outstanding pieces will find that natural backlinks still happen. You won’t have to spend much time pursuing backlink opportunities because you’ll attract more than your share.
SEO is continuously evolving, and that’s what makes it such an exciting industry for amateurs and SEO specialists. There will be many more evolutions in the coming years, but savvy operators will continue to get their share of traffic from the search rankings. Never give up on your dream to get to the top.
