Saving Files For The Web

January 24, 2013 by Surgeon's Advisor

When it comes to plastic surgery marketing on the Internet, a successful website is one that provides lots of content. Many visitors will likely find your website while searching for information about plastic surgery procedures and plastic surgeons. Valuable, keyword-rich content can help you to rank well in the search engines and bring more traffic to your site, while also providing visitors with the information they’re looking for and helping to convert them into actual patients.

It’s important, however, to consider the format of that content before putting it on your website, particularly how you save your files. Most software packages have an option for Web Page’ under the Save As’ command. This is an easy way to save a document in HTML format without having to write a single line of HTML code yourself. Sounds ideal, right?

Unfortunately, that page isn’t always ideal for your website. It can contain lots of information and proprietary code. Microsoft Word often adds unnecessary information like style definitions and Microsoft- and Office-specific tags. Further, the size of the document is often much larger than you want on your website, increasing load times for your visitors. Another issue to consider is the MetaData, information which can enhance the editing, viewing, filing and retrieval of Office documents but can also include your name, the name of your computer, document revision, and comments in the source code unless removed from the HTML document. In addition, not all fonts and font sizes will be correctly displayed and a visitors’ browser may use their default font and font sizes which can interrupt a page’s layout.

There are, however, some things that you can do to better optimize your documents to be converted into HTML. You should eliminate any formatting that may not display well or may not display at all in HTML format. These can include the following: headers and footers, page breaks, special paragraph formatting like indentation and double spacing, tabs, special characters, and page numbers. You can also create new documents for better HTML formatting by using a web page template.
