Color Choice In Doctor Web Design

January 25, 2013 by Surgeon's Advisor

An important, and often overlooked, step in doctor web design involves the choice of colors. Certain colors are capable of conveying certain emotions and, as such, can influence an individual’s visit to and impression of a site. It’s important that colors be chosen wisely when designing a website. The colors that you choose for your plastic surgery website should reflect the mood of your site and the message that you want to convey.

Blue is one of the most widely accepted colors in web design. In fact, nearly everyone likes some shade of blue. Blue is considered calming and peaceful. It can convey stability, harmony, health, confidence, loyalty, and dependability. It can be a very good choice for a plastic surgery website. On the downside blue, particularly when used in large quantities, can signify depression, coldness, winter, and conservatism.

Red is a passionate and energetic color. It can signify love, excitement, fire, strength, power and leadership. In general, red is best used as an accent color in web design, serving to draw a visitor’s attention to important elements. On the downside, red can also signify danger, war, anger, blood, and aggression. When red is mixed with equally intense greens or purples, the effect can be too jarring on the eyes.

Yellow is generally considered a joyful, sunny color. It signifies sunlight, summer, happiness, wealth, hope, optimism and idealism. It is also considered an intellectual color. Yellow can also be negative, signifying cowardice, avarice, illness, hazards and dishonesty. It also has a tendency, particularly in older people, to create feelings of anxiety and anger. For your plastic surgery website, yellow may be appropriate if you’re targeting a younger audience, but is best avoided if your audience includes older individuals.

Green is a natural color and it is actually the most restful color for the eye. It can signify nature, spring, fertility, youth, movement, money, luck, generosity and safety. The traditional color of peace is olive green. However, green can also be negative, signifying envy, jealousy, greed, inexperience, misfortune, and illness. It is best used as a secondary or accent color. It can be particularly useful when used as an accent in a plastic surgery or other medical website, creating a feeling of safety for those things often considered dangerous, such as medicines and surgery. In fact, it seems that surgical scrubs are often green, perhaps for this very reason.

Orange is a warm, energetic color. It signifies creativity, enthusiasm, playfulness, heat, confidence and balance. It is an invigorating color capable of stimulating mental activity. On the downside, orange can also signify warning and danger. It is a color best used for children and young people.

Purple is associated with nobility and royalty. It signifies wisdom, dignity, power, ambition, luxury and independence. It is stable like blue, yet energetic like red. Purple can also convey negatives like arrogance, exaggeration, cruelty, confusion and mourning. It is most appealing to children.

Brown is considered a reliable and sturdy color. It conveys earthiness, durability, reliability, comfort and simplicity. On the downside brown, particularly too much brown, can be seen as dull, drab, boring, sad or dirty. Brown can be a good color to use for a plastic surgery website to convey feelings of dependability and it is particularly good for male audiences.

Beige and gray are neutral colors that can be used with nearly all other colors. They are best used with a punch of bright color to keep them from appearing too dull or drab. Gray is capable of stimulating creativity and productivity. When used in large quantities, they can convey apathy, monotony, and somberness.

Black is a sophisticated and powerful color. It can convey elegance, formality, wealth, style and even mystery. Like beige and gray, black can go with all other color and can even help highlight other colors. On the downside black, especially too much black, can have a negative impact. It can signify death, fear, threat, mortality and danger.
