Marketing News: Yahoo Brags Over Larger Search Engine Index

This week, Yahoo announced that its search engine index, which includes over 20 billion items, is far larger overall than Google’s. Further, Yahoo declared their index to be the most in depth in terms of ‘web objects’ on the search market. Yahoo’s index, as reported in the Yahoo Search Blog, now includes 19.2 billion web documents, 1.6 billion images and more than 50 million audio and video files. This news makes it clear that Yahoo has become a search engine powerhouse over the past year.

But just how much does size matter? While size may be important in terms of the ability of a search engine to return a sizeable number of results, many do feel that quality is more important than quantity. What matters to many more than size is the accuracy, quality and relevance of results and that larger size can often diminish the returns. Nevertheless, Yahoo has accomplished a great deal over the past year, including vertical search, personal and social search, Flickr, Y!Q, Yahoo! Desktop Search, and open search APIs across all verticals via the Yahoo! Developer Network.
