Understanding Visitor Logs and Using Them To Your Benefit

A visitor traffic log provides a record of a website’s activity. The information contained within a visitor log can be very valuable, providing great insight into your marketing efforts. By analyzing the log, you can measure your site’s success and determine what works and what doesn’t, as well as what needs to be changed and how to change it.

Some of the information that you can find within your visitor log includes the following: the keywords and keyword phrases that visitors are using to find your site; the number of visitors to your site, including the percentage of new visitors to return visitors; the length of stay for each visitor; and the pages on which visitors enter your site and where they go within your site. All of these can help you to determine what appeals to your visitor traffic while also giving you ideas for fresh, new content which can help enhance your search engine rankings and your visitor satisfaction.

Keywords are an important part of getting good rankings in search engines. Your visitor log will list the keywords and keyword phrases that are bringing Internet searchers to your site. Some of these will be ones that you’d expect to find, while others may be a bit more surprising. Any keywords that are performing particularly well can be used to build new content or update existing pages.

Your visitor log will also tell you the number of visitors to your site, both new and return traffic. Ideally, these should be well-balanced. If there is a deficiency of or drop in new visitors, your keywords may not be ranking well in search engines or other website promotional activities that you’re involved with may not be working effectively. If, on the other hand, there is a drop in the amount of return visits, this suggests that more new and updated content must be created. Without any updating of information, visitors will have no incentive to return. And, remember, the addition of fresh, new content has the added benefit of boosting search engine results, which in turn can bring your increased new visitor traffic.

The length of each visitor’s stay is also recorded in your visitor log. If many visitors are coming to your site without staying for long, that indicates that they’re not finding what you’re looking for. You can further check the pages on which these short-time visitors entered your site as they may not be rich in content and will need to be revamped. Another quick fix for the short time visits is to make sure that you have links to other pages on your site prominently displayed, thus giving visitors other alternatives which may meet their needs. The longer that you can keep a visitor at your site, the more likely they are to become an actual patient.

Your visitor log can also give you a glimpse at how user-friendly your site’s architecture and navigation is. You can track your visitors as they move throughout your site. If visitors are clicking all over your site and then leaving, your navigation may simply be too confusing. You can also see if one particular page or a few pages are being heavily accessed by users, thus indicated that they’re particularly popular. You can carefully examine those pages to determine why they’re working so well, and their success can then be duplicated on other pages.

By analyzing your visitor log, you can find all the information you need to ensure that your website is a successful one. Remember, they are there for your benefit so be sure to use them.
