Keywords vs. Keyword Phrases

When targeting keywords for the pages within your plastic surgery site, it often makes the most sense to choose keyword phrases rather single keywords. There are several reasons why this is true.

The first reason is that single keywords tend to be hyper-competitive. These single word searches can generate millions upon millions of results. Trying to rank well among all of these results can prove difficult. In fact, it’s quite unlikely that your site can rank within the top 10 results, let alone the top 20.

The second reason is that users are now using keyword phrases to perform searches more often than they use single keywords. It seems that, due to the large amount of pages produced by single word searches, most users have come to realize that phrases tend to produce more relevant results. Studies have shown that most people today are conducting searches using phrases of two to three words.

The third, and perhaps the most important, reason is that keyword phrases provide you with more targeted traffic than single word keywords. For instance, when a person searches for ‘surgery’, they may not be looking for information about plastic surgery. Even if you can rank well for that search term and get that person to your site, they’ll simply end up leaving because it wasn’t plastic surgery that they were looking for.

It’s best to get specific with your keyword phrases, and many time being location specific can be beneficial. For instance, if your plastic surgery website has an informational page on breast augmentation, you may want to target the following keyword phrases: ‘plastic surgery’, ‘plastic surgery in New York’, ‘breast augmentation’, ‘breast augmentation in New York’, ‘plastic surgeon’, ‘plastic surgeon in New York’, ‘breast augmentation surgeon’, ‘breast augmentation surgeon in New York’, and so on.
