Cosmetic Surgery Marketing - Controversial Marketing Terms

Ad Blocking – The blocking of advertisements and other annoyances from web pages.
Banner Blindness – A term referring to the tendency that web visitors have to ignore banner ads.
Buzzword – A term used to refer to a trendy or current word or phrase.
Cookie – A small data filed stored on a user's computer by a website, allowing websites to identify users and keep track of their preferences.
Email Spam – Email that is unwanted or unsolicited and is used to advertise products or broadcast political or social commentary. Also known as Unsolicited Commercial E-mail (UCE), Unsolicited Bulk E-mail (UBE), Gray Mail, and Junk Mail.
FFA – Free-for-all links list whereby there are no qualifications for adding a link.
Incentivized Traffic – Traffic, or visitors, who receive a form of compensation for visiting a site.
Mousetrapping – Using browser tricks, such as disabling the ‘back’ button or generating repeat pop-up windows, in order to keep a visitor captive at a site.
Opt-Out – (1) A type of program which assumes inclusion unless otherwise stated; (2) Removal from an opt-out program.
Pagejacking – The copying of web page from its original site to another site. Also refers to various ways in which users are covertly redirected to different websites.
Spam – Inappropriate or unsolicited commercial message.
Search Engine Spam – Excessive manipulation (i.e. hidden text, keyword stuffing, cloaking, doorway pages, etc.) meant to influence search engine rankings, often times for pages containing little or no relevant content.
Trick Banner – A banner ad which attempts to trick people into clicking by appearing like a dialog box with buttons, thereby imitating an operating system or error message.
