Above The Fold – The portion of a web page which can be seen without having to scroll down.
Ad Space – The space available on a web page for advertisements.
ALT Text (Alternate Text) – An HTML attribute that provides an alternative text description when non-textual elements, usually images, cannot be displayed, such as when pictures are turned off in the browser.
Animated GIF – A moving picture in the GIF format which creates the effect of animation by cycling through a series of static images.
Bookmark – A store link within a web browser that is used for future quick retrieval.
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) – A style sheet format for HTML documents used to separate style from structure on web pages.
Favicon – A small icon that some web browsers use to identify a website that has been bookmarked.
Flash – An animated graphics technology and format developed by Macromedia which enables much interactivity to fit into a relatively small file size.
Frames – A feature of a web browser that allows a web page to appear in a separate scrollable window on the screen.
Home Page – A website’s main page.
JavaScript – A popular scripting language that was developed by Netscape and creates interactive websites.
Linkrot – Refers to previously accessible web pages that have been moved or deleted and are therefore unreachable at that URL.
Navigation – The act of moving from one web page to another web page; ‘surfing the web’.
Site Search – The ability to search within one site.
Splash Page – An introductory page displayed before the home page of a website, often showing a name, logo, copyright or other related information.
Web Browser – A software program allowing a user to browse the web and the Internet (i.e. Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer).
Web Design – The creation of the layout and structure of a web page through the selection and coordination of available components.
Web Site Usability – How easy it is for visitors to use a website.
