Should You Translate Your Web Site Into Other Languages?
Studies
show that some 43% of Internet users do not read English. Given this
statistic, it may be wise for you to consider translating your website
into other languages. When it comes to plastic surgery marketing
on the Internet, consider your own practice. Do you have many patients
for whom English is not their first language? Have you had potential
patients contact you who spoke another language? Have you lost patients
because of a language barrier?
Translating your website or incorporating a translation service is
also a good way to promote your website and your practice. Unfortunately,
doing so can be expensive, with rates as much as $0.04 to $0.12 per
source word. Nevertheless, translation may be very important, particularly
if you’re looking to reach a foreign audience or even an audience
at home for whom English is not their first language. Consider the language
or languages that would benefit your site for translation. Though Spanish
is by far the most widely spoken language on the Internet, other languages
may also be applicable to your particular site. The following are ways
in which you can translate your website:
- Human Translator. You can find a human translator,
either a freelance translator or one who works through an agency.
This is one of the best methods for translation as it typically offers
the most authenticity.
- Online Dictionaries. These are often good for foreign
users who know English but may not be familiar with specific technical
terms. Some online dictionaries allow you to copy their dictionary
and place it on your web page, while others have you add a link to
their online dictionary on your site. This is especially good for
websites containing a lot of technical content, which can certainly
occur with plastic surgery marketing.
- Automated Translators. Generally speaking, automated
translators aren’t the best option as they’re not yet
to the point where they can accurately and effectively translate localized
meanings, slang and grammar. They can, however, give users a general
idea of your content and they’re also good because they are
capable of translating to multiple languages. You can include a link
to an automated translation service on your site.
The above services can also be used in combination, particularly for
large web sites. For instance, your main pages may be translated by
a human translator, leaving your minor pages to an online dictionary
or automated translator service.
