Simplifying Your Site's Navigation

Simple navigation is effective navigation. Whether you're advertising doctors or any other business on the Internet, it's essential that your website's visitors be able to understand your site's navigation. That means that your navigation must be simple. The following are two easy tips to help you make your navigation a simple and effective one:

  • Understandable Link Titles. Your link titles must make sense and they must be understandable. The only way that visitors will click on a link or find the information they're looking for is if they know exactly what your links are for. Keep in mind that a link name making sense to you may not make sense to your visitors. This is particularly true when it comes to advertising doctors because plastic surgery terms that are familiar to you may be confusing to a visitor. A good example is blepharoplasty, which most visitors to your site will know better as eyelid surgery. Also avoid using clever or obscure terms.
  • Fewer Navigation Options. It's best to keep your site's navigation options to a minimum, or at least to a manageable number. Too many choices can overwhelm your visitors. When faced with an overwhelming number of links, visitors lose focus and fail to see their individual options. Another reason why navigation options should be kept to a minimum is that it's best not to send your visitors off in too many directions. Your navigation should be set up in a way that it leads your visitors through your site while keeping in mind your ultimate goal, namely to have visitors contact you and become actual patients. Too many options distract from this goal. Ideally, your navigation menu should include a maximum of five to seven options. If you must have more than this, consider grouping your links into several categories.
