Meta Tags: Important Or Not?

The search engines are a major part of your plastic surgery marketing plan. For many businesses, the search engines are capable of bringing the majority of traffic to a website. There are a lot of potential patients out there conducting searches on the Internet using terms like plastic surgery', plastic surgeon', cosmetic surgery', liposuction', rhinoplasty', and so on. In order for them to find your site, your pages need to be optimized to rank well in the search engine results.

While there are many elements that go into search engine optimization, one much debated one involves meta tags. Some believe meta tags are essential to good rankings, while others ignore them altogether. Who's right? Meta tags were originally a tool that showed the search engines what a website was about without those descriptions appearing on the page for visitors to see. Unfortunately, too many people started abusing the meta tags, stuffing them with highly popular keywords regardless of how irrelevant they were to their actual site's content. As a result, the search engines were forced to give meta tags a bit less importance.

Meta tags still have their use, however, and they shouldn't be ignored. The most important meta tag is the description meta tag. This tag provides a description of a particular page and is what some search engines show to Internet users in their search results. Make sure that your description meta tag is unique to and representative of each particular page, providing accurate, detailed information about that page's content. Your title meta tag should also be unique to each page and representative of its content. The keyword meta tags are those meta tags which have been abused by spammers the most. Try to position your most important keywords at the beginning of this tag. Another added benefit of using your tags and ensuring that they're accurate is that they can be a great signal to the search engine's of your site's legitimacy. Just make sure that your tags don't look like the tags of spammers,
