Internet Advertising For Cosmetic Surgeons: Domain Name Tips

When it comes to Internet advertising for cosmetic surgeons, most people probably believe that choosing a domain name would be an easy task. After all, wouldn't you simply choose the surgeon's name, something like www.drjohnsmith.com? It certainly may be as simple as that. Many people complain that all the good domain names are taken, but using a formal name as a domain increases your chances of that domain being available, unless of course your name actually is John Smith. Further, by including dr' in the name your chances are even greater that the domain is available. However, just because the domain you want is available doesn't necessarily mean that it's a good domain name. There are some other things to keep in mind when choosing your domain name.

A good domain name is one which visitors can easily read and remember. As good domain names become harder and harder to come by, however, it seems that they seem to be getting longer. Unfortunately, longer can be much more difficult to read, let alone remember. Consider the following domain names:

www.doctorjonathonthomaswilliams.com
www.doctorssmithwilliamsjonescosmeticsurgery.com

Both examples are fairly illegible, particularly when all lower-case letters are used, and it would be easy for a person to misspell the domain name. Nevertheless, it is often best to use the name of your practice as your domain name since this is what most people would expect. One way that people get around this is to capitalize individual words or use dashes as in the following:

www.DoctorJonathonThomasWilliams.com
www.doctors-smith-williams-jones-cosmetic-surgery.com

While these may be easier to read, they still pose potential problems. First, with capitalization, people often mistakenly think that domain names are always capital letter sensitive and this can get confusing. Though there are some exceptions, most servers ignore capitalization. By using dashes, the domain is, again, easier to read, but dashes are also confusing to users. Better examples might be the following:

www.DrJTWilliams.com
www.drjtwilliams.com
www.SWJCosmeticSurgery.com
www.SmithWilliamsJones.com

Once you've registered a good domain name, it's important that you support it by using it frequently on your website and in print. You can incorporate your domain into your site's logo which, though subtle, reinforces the domain for site visitors. Adding your domain name to all printed material also reinforces it but is also a great way to promote your website. Be sure to include your website address in your print advertising and on invoices, business cards, brochures, informational material and the like.
